Why Is Your Ring Doorbell Flashing Blue?

Interestingly, some people only know that when the Ring doorbell flashes blue, it means that someone is watching.

That could be true that the camera is starting up or recording, but that is not the only reason why it flashes blue.

Ring doorbells may flash blue for a variety of reasons. It usually conveys different messages.

For instance, it could mean your device is charging the battery or even connecting to your WiFi connection.

It may also indicate that the built-in speaker has been activated, the system is rebooting, your device has reverted to factory settings, or even when someone presses your doorbell.

In rare cases, the issue of Ring doorbell flashing blue may occur due to power supply problems or WiFi connectivity issues.

But these are simple issues that you can resolve or prevent by using an uninterrupted power supply or ensuring you have a stable internet connection.

In the next sections, we will look at how to troubleshoot the issue of the Ring Doorbell flashing blue in the form of a step-by-step guide.

We will also list some of the key tools and requirements that will help you resolve the problem.

    Tools and Requirements

For you to effectively troubleshoot and resolve the issue of Ring Doorbell flashing blue, you need some minimum tools and requirements.

Meeting these requirements will help you resolve the problem in less time and with minimum hassle.

With that in mind, here are the key tools and requirements:

    • Stable internet connection with necessary connection devices like WiFi router
    • Working battery
    • Your Ring device’s latest firmware updates
    • Source of power
    • The Ring app
    • Ring Doorbell user manual with instructions on how to reset your device
    • This step-by-step guide will help you troubleshoot the issue.
    • Not more than 30 minutes of your time to address the issue

    Step by Step Guide

In this section, we will discuss the various troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem of your Ring Doorbell flashing blue light.

Follow these steps systematically to avoid repetition:

Step 1: Find Out Why Your Ring Doorbell is Flashing Blue

Before thinking of any solution to this problem, it is crucial to establish the root cause of the problem.

For this reason, you should assess whether the problem occurred due to WiFi connectivity issues, low battery, a power outage, or other potential causes.

Once you understand the root cause, you will be able to select the most effective solution.

Step 2: Check Your WiFi Connection

More often, Ring Doorbells devices cannot operate well without a stable internet connection.

So, make sure that you find out the status and rectify the issue as soon as possible.

To know if your device has lost its WiFi connection, check it from the Ring app. If WiFi is to blame, the app will not receive any notification to display events.

The Ring app will also allow you to check your WiFi signal strength. In this case, you tap the three lines in the top-left corner of the home screen of the app.

From here, select Devices and choose your specific doorbell, and head to Device Health > Signal Strength in the Network section.

If you found out that the signal is weak, try placing your doorbell at an appropriate location with a strong WiFi signal.

And if that is not possible, move your router as close as possible to your doorbell. The goal here is to ensure that you eradicate any obstacle that may lower signal quality.

Step 3: Check If You Connected to the Right Network

If the WiFi connection is strong but still experiencing connectivity issues, the issue could be that you are linking to the wrong network.

Essentially, the doorbell should be on the same local network as your phone.

Note that your Ring Doorbell will not automatically connect to the same WiFi as your smartphone.

So, what you need to do is change this setting through the Ring app.

To do that, open the app and choose Device Health > Change Network, and then follow the on-screen prompts.

    Step 4: Restart Your Router

If the above connection troubleshooting strategies don’t work, consider restarting your router.

By power cycling, you will refresh the internals of your router and extend its WiFi signal.

The easiest way to restart the router is to unplug it from the power source and insert it back within a minute or two.

    Step 5: Check the Battery

As indicated above, a weak battery could cause your Ring Doorbell to flash blue.

Most Ring Doorbell models, such as Doorbell 2, Doorbell 3, and Doorbell 3 Plus, require a lithium-ion battery to work.

And when their batteries grow weak, they will flash a continuous blue to alert you. So, you should check if your device battery is still working perfectly.

You do so by using a new battery of the same size to see if it fixes the problem. If the new battery does not resolve the issue after full charging, then you need to try other strategies.

Step 6: Update the Firmware as well as the Ring App

An outdated firmware and Ring app software are to blame for many malfunctions in your doorbell.

These software may have bugs and errors that are limiting your device from establishing a connection.

But the good thing is that manufacturers usually release the latest firmware/software updates that address such bugs and improve the overall functionality of your device.

Usually, the Ring Doorbell’s firmware updates automatically as long as you connect the device to a strong internet connection.

But do not just assume things; you can still check for updates from the app.

Just go to the Device Health settings screen and choose Devices Details > Firmware to get new updates.

Likewise, you can update the Ring app to the latest version.

To do that, visit either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store depending on the type of mobile device you are using, and then check for any new versions.

If you find them, install them right away.

Step 7: Reset Your Doorbell to Factory Settings

If you have tried the above steps and you are still experiencing the problem of Ring Doorbell flashing blue, your next course of action is to reset the device to factory settings.

The good thing is that the process is straightforward, as it doesn’t require any technical skills.

However, you should note that it will erase any settings you may have on your Ring Doorbell. In other words, you will have to configure your device once again after the reset process.

To reset your Ring Doorbell, all you need to do is look for the reset button and press it for about 20 seconds until the front light starts blinking.

After that, release the button and wait for the blinking to stop. If you can’t find the reset button right away, check it on one side of the gadget or at the back.

Step 8: Reach Out to Ring Customer Support

If the problem of Ring Doorbell flashing blue persists even after the above trials, consider contacting Ring customer support.

The support team will be able to look at the problem afresh and provide one-on-one guidance, especially concerning more advanced or customized troubleshooting solutions.

The team will also advise on how to handle such issues in the future.

Just make sure to narrate to them all the symptoms of the problem and any troubleshooting steps that you have tried so that they can offer relevant help.

    Final Thoughts

Ring Doorbell is a popular smart home gadget that provides convenience and enhanced security.

However, if you are experiencing issues with your Ring Doorbell, especially the problem of flashing blue light, then it may frustrate these gains.

So, you would find a way of resolving the issue or Ring Doorbell flashing blue to enjoy full functionality of your device.

We hope this guide has helped resolve the issue of flashing blue lights.

The good thing is that the problem of flashing blue lights can be traced to simple things like internet connections or charging batteries.

And even for more serious causes of the problem, you can easily resolve them by restarting or resetting the system.
