Upgrading to a reliable video doorbell can enhance the security of your home. It lets you manage your home’s security right from your smartphone.

But the issue is that most doorbells run on battery, meaning that you will constantly charge it and even replace it at some point.

True, manufacturers promise a long-lasting battery, but that may not match up with real-world use.

If you are like most homeowners, you may be having a Ring video doorbell in your home. Being one of the most trusted devices, you will have peace of mind knowing your home is protected.

But just like the rest, it also uses a battery. So, you may be wondering how long does Ring doorbell battery lasts.

Well, we have tested some Ring doorbells and have information on how long they last. But before we look into that, let’s first understand the type of battery that Ring doorbells use.

    Ring Doorbell Battery

image of Ring Video Doorbell 2 (2nd Generation)

In a nutshell, Ring security devices use rechargeable lithium batteries that you can charge using a micro USB charger.

So, it is wise to invest in an extra battery to ensure continuous use when the main battery drains.

Since these types of batteries require a bit of maintenance, you may want to know how often you need to recharge them.

Likewise, it is important to understand long-term replacement costs.

So, How Long Does Ring Doorbell Battery Last?

After fully charged, the official rating of Ring doorbell batteries is about six to 12 months. But keep in mind that the rating will vary based on models.

Typically, newer models tend to last longer, generally 10 to 12 months.

Ring claims that these ratings are applicable for average use. To be specific, an average battery will need a recharge after 1000 activations.

This translates to about three to four events per day.

The actual battery life is therefore dependent on motion detection frequency and live view usage.

So, if yours is facing towards the streets, it might get triggered easily, thus draining the battery faster.

Battery Life of Different Ring Doorbell Models

Ring Video Doorbell 2 (2nd Generation)

Ring 2 has a built-in battery that lasts for about six to 12 months with normal usage.

In this case, it is only handling about three to five events per day.

And once it has completely drained, it will take about five to eight hours to fully charge.

The good thing is that the Ring Video Doorbell 2 comes with a hardwired option.

    Ring Video Doorbell 3

This model comes with a reusable battery that you will need to recharge upon drainage.

A fully charged Ring Video Doorbell 3 battery will last for six to 12 months.

Of course, this will depend on usage and settings.

As it is rechargeable, a quick-release battery pack can take about five to ten hours to fully recharge.

    Ring Video Doorbell 4

Just like the above models, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 comes with a removable and rechargeable battery.

According to the company, the battery can last for about six to 12 months.

The time it will take to completely drain will depend on usage.

It is also important to note that it takes about five to ten hours to fully recharge the battery.

    Ring Battery Doorbell Plus

The Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is not your ordinary Ring doorbell battery. It comes with special features that make it last longer.

In fact, Ring claims that it can last three times longer than the 2nd generation Ring doorbell battery.

But this will also be dependent on your environmental conditions and settings.

Some of the qualities that make Ring Battery Doorbell Plus last longer are better video quality as well as people and animal recognition.

Better viewing angle and head-to-toe video can also improve battery life.

How to Check Your Ring Video Doorbell Battery

Besides knowing how long does Ring doorbell battery lasts, it is also important to understand how to check battery level.

You normally do so via the Ring app. So, to check how much battery your doorbell has left follow these steps

    • First, open the Ring app and tap the three-line icon. You will find this icon in the top-left corner.
    • Go to the Devices option and choose your Ring doorbell.
    • After that, tap Power Settings and check battery level percentage. You can also check the battery status from this screen.

Once you have checked your battery level, you may want to take advantage of some built-in settings. Ring provides four shortcuts to enable you to make your battery last longer.

They include snapshot capture, motion frequency, video recording length, and advanced motion detection.

    Recharging Your Ring Doorbell Battery

The question of how long does Ring Doorbell battery lasts goes hand in hand with how to recharge the Ring Doorbell battery.

It is good to understand how easy or difficult the process is. We will do so by showing you the exact steps:

    1. First, unscrew the security screw at the bottom of the doorbell.
    2. Next, remove the faceplate by lifting it up.
    3. Thereafter, press the black tab on the bottom to remove the battery.
    4. Now, plug the battery into the mini USB charging cable to recharge it.
    5. You need to monitor the red and green lights. When it’s first charging, both the green and red will light up. But when fully charged, only the green light will show up. It may take up to 10 hours to fully charge depending on your model.

Factors that Influence Ring Doorbell Battery Life

How long does Ring doorbell battery lasts will depend on several factors. Here, we will not focus on those factors that are model-specific.

So, with that out of the way, here are the factors that will influence how often you need to recharge your battery:

    • Weather conditions: Ring Doorbell batteries are very sensitive to extreme weather conditions such as high or low temperatures. Xtreme heat will cause your battery power to drain quickly. In some cases, overheating may even damage internal components. Similarly, extremely cold weather will cause the battery to discharge faster. It might cause it to stop if the cold temperature extends for a while.
    • Frequency of use: Your Ring doorbell battery will drain faster if it captures several events each day and vice versa.
    • Live view usage: If you are going to use the live view feature, then your Ring doorbell battery will drain faster. It consumes more energy to view real-time video footage of your surroundings.
    • Signal strength: Poor or dropping WiFi signal will cause your Ring doorbell battery to drain faster. The increased consumption is due to constant disconnects and reconnects.
    • Doorbell position: If your doorbell is facing a busy area like a street, it might detect frequent motion. And as you know, the more events your doorbell handles, the faster the battery drains.
    • User or manufacturer’s settings: Some settings you choose for your doorbell might influence how the device uses the battery. For instance, choosing longer video recording or high motion sensitivity will increase battery usage. Likewise, manufacturers’ configurations like continuous self-checks will increase consumption. So, you should adjust these settings to optimize battery usage.

How to Improve Your Ring Doorbell Battery Life

As we mentioned above, the more active your doorbell is, the faster it drains the battery.

Several factors can also come into play.

So, you have to consider everything to ensure optimal battery use.

The best thing is that there are several ways to preserve the Ring doorbell battery. Here are just the main ones:

    • Use settings to disable the Ring doorbell at the busiest times of the day. The system will not notify you often, thus saving on battery life.
    • Change Smart Alerts to Light or Standard mode. Doing this will help the video doorbell to use less battery power.
    • If your Ring doorbell allows you to set Motion Zones, you can adjust the Motion Zones to avoid busy areas. This way, you will reduce the number of unwanted triggers, which may increase usage and battery consumption.
    • Ensure your WiFi connection is strong at all times. This will reduce cases of disconnections and reconnections.
    • If your model supports a solar charge, you can use it to provide continuous power to your battery, reducing the need for frequent charging.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do all Ring doorbells have batteries?

Not all Ring doorbells have batteries, but the majority use rechargeable batteries.

In fact, it is only Ring Video Doorbell Elite and Ring Video Doorbell Pro that use other methods to recharge.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro uses existing doorbell wires while the Elite charges via the Ethernet cable.

How do I know the battery level?

You can check for the battery level using the Ring app.

All you need to do is open the app and go to the Device Settings.

From here, you tap on your doorbell and select device health.

It will show you your doorbell battery status under the Battery Level section.

    Does Ring provide low-battery notifications?

Yes, Ring sends you notification when the battery drops below 30%.

The good thing is that you can check which device is consuming the most battery in order to make the necessary changes.

Can I use my Ring doorbell while the battery is charging?

It can be yes and no depending on your model.

Some hardwired models like the Pro and Elite allow you to use the device while the battery is charging.

    Closing Remarks

Investing in the right Ring doorbell will improve the security of your home. But you have to ensure that you do so without draining its battery.

But now that you know how long does Ring doorbell battery lasts, you are in a better position to optimize things.

The good thing is that newer Ring doorbells come with battery-saving features that help you extend battery life.
